Martinsville Speedway
Martinsville Speedway is located in Martinsville, VA. The closest major city is Greensboro North Carolina. It is about 35 miles from Greensboro.
The Speedway ran its first race on July Fourth in 1948. The track length is a little bit over 1/2 a mile. This is the shortest track in the Nascar Nextel Series.
The Speedway can hold 65,000 spectators. The owners of the track is the International Speedway Corporation. In 2004 the Speedway was sold for $192 million dollars due to the estate sale after the death of Mary Weatherford to the France family exclusively who were only part owners before.
Nextel cup and Whelen Modified Tour winners of the races at Martinsville win a large clock called a 'Longcase Clock'. This looks like a Grandfather clock. The reason for this odd award is due to Martinsville Virginia's furniture industry which has a long history in the area.
